DESCRIPTION:Haydn: Trio in A Hob XV/18\nBeethoven: Trio in B flat Op 97 ‘Archduke’ \nMartin formed the Roscoe Trio with Fenella Humphreys and Jessica Burroughs in 2018 and here they bring a programme of trios from two great composers. Haydn’s good-natured music\, written in London\, sparkles and dances\, with elegance and infusions of gypsy music: Haydn was in his sixties when he wrote this but the music retains an energy and wit from his younger days. \nBeethoven’s Archduke Trio conversely was written in his early forties but hints at the profundity of his later works: there is a timelessness and spaciousness in its beauty\, but also a grandeur and virtuosity throughout.

DESCRIPTION:Panufnik: Heartfelt\nBeethoven: String Quartet in C sharp minor Op 131 \nRoxanna Panufnik’s Heartfelt was commissioned by the Sacconi Quartet in 2019 and is inspired by the heartbeat of a brown bear\, as well as drawing on Uzbek and Bulgarian music. The result is a magical addition to the quartet repertoire\, “a beautiful\, imaginative exploration of that vital\, beating organ” (The Observer) and “shot through with a poignancy that is infinitely touching” (Seen & Heard). \nBeethoven’s late period saw a troubled\, unwell\, deaf man writing music of extraordinary intensity\, innovation and profundity: after his vast ninth symphony\, premiered in 1824\, he turned almost solely to string quartets in his last years. \nThese late quartets were roundly dismissed by the audience of the day: composer Louis Spohr called them ‘indecipherable\, uncorrected horrors’. And yet this music has had a deep effect on generations of composers since\, and is today held to be some of the great art of all time. \nPerformers: Sacconi Quartet

SUMMARY:Talk: The poetry and music of science
DESCRIPTION:What human qualities are needed to make scientific discoveries\, and which to make great art? Many would point to ‘imagination’ and ‘creativity’ in the second case but not the first. Tom McLeish compares creativity in science and art\, and challenges the assumption that science is in any sense less creative than art. He draws on historical and contemporary examples to provide a broader understanding\, and brings medieval philosophy and theology to bear on current questions of creativity. \nFinding that artists and scientists think imaginatively in visual\, textual and abstract modes\, he will focus on the last one\, where music and mathematics make their mysteries\, for this festival. \nTom McLeish FRS is a theoretical physicist whose work on soft matter is renowned. He is Professor of Natural Philosophy at the University of York.

DESCRIPTION:Britten: Canticle IV – Journey of the Magi\nSaint-Saëns: Violons dans le soir\nPiazzolla: Tango\nSchubert: Oblivion\nBritten: Canticle II – Abraham and Isaac\nSongs by Purcell and Saint-Saëns \nIn medieval Beverley\, the annual procession of mystery plays captured the imaginations of the whole town. Britten sets two mystery play texts amongst his canticles – colourfully exploring the behind-the-scenes reality of the wise men’s journey from the east\, and heart-stoppingly depicting the story of Abraham\, called by God to sacrifice his own son. \nThe night-time theme of the Magi journey is picked up in Purcell’s radiant Evening Hymn and Schubert’s sublime piano trio Notturno. A more sultry nocturnal mood is captured in Piazzolla’s tango\, marking the Argentinian composer’s centenary\, and for this we’re delighted to welcome back to New Paths violinist Fenella Humphreys. SUMMARY:Art exhibition: Song of Songs
DESCRIPTION:On show in Beverley Minster during the festival is an exhibition of linocuts by Andrew Anderson. The exquisite works displayed are drawn from two areas of Anderson’s output as a linocutter – works inspired by Norfolk country churches\, and works based on love poems in the Old Testament known variously as ‘The Canticles’\, ‘The Song of Solomon’ and ‘The Song of Songs’. These second century BC love poems have inspired artists and musicians through the ages. \nAnderson sees both the verses and his depiction of rural churches from the viewpoint of an architect.   For 35 years Anderson was architect to a large number of churches including two Norman Cathedrals. Whilst the imagery in the pieces is at its root architectural\, there is something mysterious about them: architectural forms are combined with surprising perspectives\, and layers of meaning in text and image overlap. Now retired and living in Beverley\, this retrospective on Anderson’s life as a linocutter is a unique opportunity to see this selection of work gathered together for the first time. \nBeverley Minster is open 10am – 4pm on the Thursday\, Friday and Saturday of the festival.

DESCRIPTION:The music of Johannes Brahms and Robert Schumann reflects and celebrates many loves in their lives. Brahms remembered his beloved mother in the Horn Trio; and his love for the clarinet playing of Richard Mühlfeld drew him out of retirement to write sonatas and chamber works. Schumann composed for the love of his beloved Clara Wieck\, in his choice of Lied texts and his dedication of works such as the Piano Quintet to the capable fingers of this most talented of pianists. DESCRIPTION:Vaughan Williams Songs of Travel\nTrad arr. Britten Folksongs\nMessiaen Le Merle Noir\nDvorak String Quartet No 12 in F\, ‘American’ \nVaughan Williams’ ever-popular baritone Songs of Travel explore themes of home and travel\, setting the tone of longing and belonging for today’s concert. Britten’s arrangements of popular British folksongs were written from America\, a homesick nostalgia for the British Isles – while Messiaen’s flute work Le Merle Noir is inspired by the blackbird’s song of his own garden\, setting up a life-long fascination with birdsong and nature.
