SUMMARY:Art exhibition: Song of Songs
DESCRIPTION:On show in Beverley Minster during the festival is an exhibition of linocuts by Andrew Anderson. The exquisite works displayed are drawn from two areas of Anderson’s output as a linocutter – works inspired by Norfolk country churches\, and works based on love poems in the Old Testament known variously as ‘The Canticles’\, ‘The Song of Solomon’ and ‘The Song of Songs’. These second century BC love poems have inspired artists and musicians through the ages. \nAnderson sees both the verses and his depiction of rural churches from the viewpoint of an architect.   For 35 years Anderson was architect to a large number of churches including two Norman Cathedrals. Whilst the imagery in the pieces is at its root architectural\, there is something mysterious about them: architectural forms are combined with surprising perspectives\, and layers of meaning in text and image overlap. Now retired and living in Beverley\, this retrospective on Anderson’s life as a linocutter is a unique opportunity to see this selection of work gathered together for the first time. \nBeverley Minster is open 10am – 4pm on the Thursday\, Friday and Saturday of the festival.

SUMMARY:Talk: Love in Pen and Ink
DESCRIPTION:The music of Johannes Brahms and Robert Schumann reflects and celebrates many loves in their lives. Brahms remembered his beloved mother in the Horn Trio; and his love for the clarinet playing of Richard Mühlfeld drew him out of retirement to write sonatas and chamber works. Schumann composed for the love of his beloved Clara Wieck\, in his choice of Lied texts and his dedication of works such as the Piano Quintet to the capable fingers of this most talented of pianists. Reaching across the border to Scotland\, we hear Mendelssohn’s popular Hebrides Overture\, arranged for the King of Instruments. New Paths continues its festival tradition of commissioning new music: Alasdair Nicolson is one of Scotland’s foremost composers and this is the world premiere of his first piece of organ music\, co-commissioned with Sound Scotland.

DESCRIPTION:Ceri Owen is a Research Fellow in Music at Sidney Sussex College\, Cambridge\, where she’s writing about early twentieth-century British song and song performance. As a Vaughan Williams specialist she’s provided a number of introductions\, talks\, and reviews for the BBC. Here she introduces some of the songs by British composers performed at this year’s festival\, discussing key themes that arise in poems set by figures including Vaughan Williams\, Britten\, and Finzi\, and exploring how such composers grappled in their songs with ideas of tradition\, identity\, and cultural heritage. She also considers the role played by certain performers in shaping the creation and reception of twentieth-century British art songs.
