The 30th Beverley Chamber Music Festival opens in 5 weeks

25 August 2022

With harvest virtually complete in the East Riding and autumn on the horizon, we are so excited that the 30th Beverley Chamber Music Festival is now only five weeks away.  To begin the countdown, we pick out 5 highlights from the lavish line-up:

5. Quintet

The opening concert of the festival, ‘Opus Alpha‘, ends in a blaze of virtuosity with a performance by Martin Roscoe & the Maxwell Quartet of Dohnanyi’s Piano Quintet in C Minor, a gem of a work with an incredibly beautiful slow movement.

4. Quartets

The Maxwell Quartet also team up with rising stars, the Salomé Quartet (pictured above), to perform Mendelssohn’s joyous Octet in ‘Sunrise, Sunset‘. The Maxwells’ residency also features Vaughan Williams’ poignant On Wenlock Edge with Alessandro Fisher & Libby Burgess, plus much more including Purcell, Haydn and some of the Scottish folk for which they are famed:

3. Trio

Trio Anima make their debut in Beverley with a matinée concert in the intimate surroundings of St John of Beverley RC Church. The cornerstone of their concert ‘Between Earth and Sea‘ is Debussy’s dreamlike Sonata for Flute, Viola & Harp.

2. Doubles

The stage in St Mary’s Church will be adorned with two Steinway grand pianos on the Saturday of the festival. In ‘Roscoe & Donohoe‘, the long-standing duo partners present a thrilling programme of duets for two pianos including Rachmaninov’s Suite No. 2.  And in ‘Rhythm of the Night’, a stellar team of percussionists and pianists blow the roof off the place with a performance of Bartok’s exhilarating Sonata for 2 Pianos & Percussion.

1. One and only

Martin Roscoe gives a late-night performance of Bach’s exquisite Goldberg Variations by candlelight.  Especially chosen to mark our 30th birthday, this piece comprises 30 variations on a serene theme. And Libby Burgess starts each day of the festival with preludes and fugues from Bach’s monumental Well-Tempered Clavier Book 1.  What a way to bookend a day at the festival!

Make hay!
